Gallery Gabaldon: New space, new outlook (Excerpt/2004)
By Judith Reynolds • Special to the Durango Herald
Karyn Gabaldon defies the myths. She's a productive artist and successful businesswoman. For more than two decades, she operated Gallery Ultima on Main Avenue, selling her own paintings and featuring other Southwestern artists. In August 2002, she sold the business. Now after a 2.5 year hiatus, she will open a new gallery in the Stillwell Building at the corner of Main Avenue and Seventh Street. The gallery will face the Strater Hotel with its steady supply of prosperous visitors. "It's the best location in the Southwest," Gabaldon said in an interview earlier this week. The new space bears her name with a tag: Karyn Gabaldon Fine Arts: Elegance Through Art and Nature
The first month, she will feature works by many of the artists who will exhibit later in the year. Local artists who have already been contacted include: Ron Fundinglsand, Katherine Barr, Susan Tait, Eileen Fjerstad, Mary Lou Murray, Carolyn Reeves Johnson, Jan Goldman and Ann Smith. Solo shows will follow with periodic special events.
Sculptures to prowl the Four Corners (Excerpt/2004)
By Patricia Miller • Arts & Entertainment Editor/Durango Herald

Around 30 painted, beaded, gussied up pumas - larger than life-size - will soon parade across the Four Corners, following U.S. Highway 160 from Pagosa Springs to Cortez.
Up to 30 artists will decorate a model of a bronze puma sculpted by Rosetta, a sculptor in Loveland. Twenty-two artists from Durango, Mancos and Pagosa Springs have been accepted so far. Six more decisions are pending. The artists are: Sara Swift, Claudia DeLong, Jules Masterjohn, Amy Vaclav-Felker, Paula Bain, Lora Davis, Charles D. Bruce, Eileen Fjerstad, Mary Mellot, Amorina Martinez, Kathleen Steventon, Barbara Klema, Page Holland, Marie McCallum, Miki Harder and Caryl Goode.
